Haiti Sustainable Sanitation Conference
SOIL, in partnership with UNICEF, hosted the first Sustainable Sanitation Conference in Haiti on June 12-13, 2012. Over 150 people from over 50 groups, organizations and government ministries attended.
This review summarizes the key lessons presented and discussed at the Sustainable Sanitation Conference held at the Ritz – Kinam II Hotel in Pétion-ville, Haiti. Numerous organizations, as well as several independent consultants contributed to the conference, presenting sanitation projects, participating in panel discussions, and actively engaging in dialogue.
The outcomes were a number of ideas and initiatives discussed between the organizations present. The hope is that the conference will result in future opportunities for organizations to collaborate further, and to continue sharing information about providing more effective, efficient and sustainable sanitation for people in Haiti.
Opening the Conference
The conference began with Sasha Kramer from SOIL welcoming participants and outlining the rationale for the conference. The objective was to share knowledge and experience about current approaches to toilet design and excreta management in Haiti, and to discuss ways to try to increase access to sustainable sanitation services.
