An
afternoon of relaxing at the palace...to celebrate having overcome the broken
floor

We
spent the evening walking the grounds of the Palace San Souci.
Built in 1806 it was the palace of the first president of
Haiti,
Henri Christoph. Above
the palace, at the top of the highest mountain peak is the Citadel, known as
the eighth wonder of the world. The citadel has a 360 degree view and was constructed
to prevent the French from reinvading.
The
town of Milot
from the steps of the Palace.

Henri
Christoph’s toilet

Even
when we’re relaxing we’re thinking about toilets. We visited the site of the
toilet of the first President of Haiti, Henri Christoph. The palace
of San Souci
actually had an incredibly sophisticated water system, and Christoph
used water diverted from the mountain rains to flush his toilet. The toilet flushed into the valley below and
all the way down the mountainside you can see a trail of vegetation and flowers,
maybe some of the nitrogen from Christoph’s body still
lives in those flowers.
