Service Learning Courses

Each year we teach field based classes in Cap-Haitien for students from the University of Miami and the University of California Santa Cruz. The intersession course Sustainable Development Challenges in Haiti allows students to move from theory to practice through a combination of readings, lectures, meetings, and direct participation in the construction of an ecological sanitation system.

Go to Haiti with an open mind, an open heart, and open eyes.  Soak it all up and learn as much as you can.  Remember that you are only there for a short time, so take it in and don’t let a single opportunity pass by while you are there.  Ask a million questions.  Journal everything every day so you never forget what you are feeling and your immediate reactions to things.  Take pictures, but try to overcome the desire to fit the world inside a picture frame.  Try new things.  Allow your heart to break.  Don’t forget the names, faces, or sto
