Container Based Sanitation Takes Center Stage at World Water Week

At World Water Week, the world’s largest annual gathering focused on water issues, it was actually poop that took center stage this year! The theme of this year’s conference was “Water and Waste: Reduce and Reuse” – and the buzz around SOIL and other Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) service providers was palpable. See for yourself: Devex reported that the innovation happening in CBS was one of the top five highlights of the conference! Why all the excitement? As cities and municipalities work to increase access to sanitation, they have run up against significant limitations with the two traditional techniques: sewer systems and pit ...

EkoLakay Goes – Faster!

Nine months ago I wrote with great excitement (and to be honest, a few nerves) about SOIL’s brand new data management initiative for EkoLakay, our household toilet service. EkoLakay is now serving about 1,000 families, and as you can imagine, with weekly waste collections, monthly subscription fees, maintenance requests, and more, there’s a [poop]load of information to manage! SOIL’s new system uses Taroworks, an Android app, so that our EkoLakay team can both view and collect data on mobile phones, even while offline. When connected to the internet, the phones then transmit that data to SalesForce, a powerful cloud-hosted database which ...

EkoLakay Go!

Thanks to an exciting new development, SOIL staff will soon be wandering through the streets, staring at excitedly at their cell phones. No, Pokemon Go isn’t coming to Haiti (yet) - but SOIL is going mobile! After more than a year of research, we are moving forward with setting up a new data system for EkoLakay, SOIL’s household toilet service. From tracking a potential customer to client contracts, payments, and bucket collections, running the EkoLakay service generates a ton of important data. When we first started the service in 2011, we put all of that data in an Excel spreadsheet – and 700 customers and 6 interconnected documents later, ...

Artists Benefit SOIL In Fight Against Climate Change

When it comes to climate change, we all can do our part to reduce our impact on global warming – from increasing our use of public transportation to reducing the amount of red meat we consume, we can each do something to contribute to a solution. This year, a group of fourteen artists decided to make a more unusual contribution: using their works of contemporary art to mobilize climate change action on a larger scale. For the first part of the project, the artists displayed huge works of art around Paris while the city hosted the Climate Change Conference (COP 21).  Since governments from around the world were working on a new climate ...

SOIL on Center Stage At Haiti’s National Sanitation Conference

Although nearly 75% of Haitians lack access to toilets, it’s not for lack of effort or attention by the Haitian government. Despite the fact that the sanitation authority (known by its French acronym, DINEPA) is relatively new, formed just prior to the earthquake in 2009, they have worked tirelessly to develop a National Sanitation Strategy in response to inadequate sanitation access and Haiti’s devastating cholera outbreak that began in 2011. Haiti’s sanitation challenge has been in the implementation of the strategy, and sadly 5 years into the cholera outbreak hundreds of Haitians continue to die from the disease each year. To begin making ...

Happy Mother’s Day from SOIL!

Don’t worry, we’re not a few weeks late – in Haiti, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of May. As in America, it’s a major holiday, and last week everyone was looking for the perfect cards, flowers, and other gifts to show appreciation to their moms! Here in Port-au-Prince, there are mothers in nearly every EkoLakay household we serve, the majority whom have children under the age of 5. We thought Mother’s Day would be the perfect opportunity to show our customers some love! Our EkoLakay team put together basic hygiene kits that included a small bottle of bleach, toilet paper, Fab (a popular cleaning product in Haiti), and ...
