Haiti Signs the Paris Climate Change Accord

When representatives of 175 countries recently gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York to sign the Paris climate accord, Haiti’s interim president, Jocelerme Privert, was proudly among them. With Haiti’s simmering political crisis, an on-going cholera epidemic, and a host of other challenging domestic issues, some might see the Paris accord as a distraction from more urgent problems. Furthermore, Haiti is responsible for only 0.01% of global carbon dioxide emissions, so it’s hardly a heavy-hitter when it comes to preventing climate change. However, even though Haiti’s direct influence on the global climate crisis may be ...

Volunteer Opening: Database Expert

Are you a database guru? Do words like “servers,” “scripting” and “syncing” make your heart flutter? SOIL is developing a social business model of household sanitation in Haiti. We are currently using a series of increasingly complicated Excel Sheets to manage our 500+ customers, so we are eager to get a database in place to help us more efficiently collect, manage, and analyze our data. After a lot of research on what's already out there, we've decided that developing our own database is the best solution. We are leaning towards developing it in FileMaker Pro given that it MUST be mostly functional without internet connectivity (if ...

Back to Benin

As all of our friends and supporters know, SOIL has been working to improve access to safe, dignified sanitation in Haiti since 2006. But you may not know that from time to time, SOIL also lends a hand with Ecological Sanitation (EcoSan) projects around the globe. Recently, SOIL’s Port-au-Prince Regional Director, Baudeler "Bobo" Magloire, returned to the West African country of Benin to follow up on a project launched way back in 2012 in partnership with the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) and their local partner, ADESCA. This project was funded through a National Geographic Blackstone Innovation Challenge grant. While many of you are old ...

P-a-P’s Got a Brand New Bag*

*My apologies to the late great James Brown Here in Port-au-Prince, our customers love Konpòs Lakay – this morning we sold out our stock yet again - but there is one regular complaint we were getting: What is with that bag? It’s true. For a product that is all about restoring health to the earth, made by an organization full of people who truly love the environment, it sure had unfortunate packaging. The 5-gallon plastic bags were thin and tore easily, so they were difficult - if not impossible - to reuse. Since our waste treatment site is inside the Port-au-Prince city dump, we know firsthand how terrible it is to send more plastic bags to ...

Almost.

Almost. That word, or rather, it’s Kreyol equivalent, preske (press-keh), is being used quite a lot these days. The construction that the landlord is doing at our office is almost done. We’ve almost perfected the updated technical design for our cement toilets. We’re almost ready to order our new, more environmentally-friendly compost packaging with its improved informational label. It’s almost time to harvest our peanut experiment – an exciting one because peanuts are a major crop here, but a bit nerve-wracking, as there are biological reasons to suspect that compost might not have the huge impact that it has on other crops we’ve ...
