Theo Talks Episode 27: Coconuts for Fish!

Here at SOIL, we love transforming waste of all kinds. Though poop is always a favorite, we're also working to promote composting of kitchen waste and vegetable scraps, which is easy for anyone to do at home. In Theo Talks Episode 27, our resourceful north Haiti Regional Director, Theo Huitema, takes some salvaged coconut shells that were headed to the dump and turns them into a delicious snack for the fish in our aquaculture project! We hope you enjoy this short video and then take a few minutes to check out the full Theo Talks series.

SOIL Toilets on the Move!

Business is booming for SOIL's new mobile toilet enterprise! The mobile toilets, which are donated port-a-potties that our sanitation team has retrofitted with SOIL's simple EcoSan technology, are our newest income-generating project. Along with our household toilet pilot business, compost sales, and marketing crops from our research farms, profits from mobile toilet rentals provide valuable revenue to support our free public toilets as well as other SOIL projects. We've set up mobile toilets for everything from construction sites to Carnival, but a recent rental was particularly fun for us! Our supporters at NRG Energy, who are donating additional ...

Under Fire

Dear friends, Just a few short months ago, I wrote to you about how the SOIL team has transformed a section of Trutier in the Port-au-Prince city dump. While we're happy to have created a lovely, lush little outpost in the sea of trash and rubble, we're even prouder of what happens there every day: thousands of pounds of human waste are slowly being transformed into rich, organic compost. Unfortunately, all of our hard work at Trutier recently came under fire - literally. The private company which was helping to operate the landfill lost financing and pulled out, leaving the government with very limited staff and equipment. Without the resources for ...

Many Hands: SOIL's EcoSan Training

Haiti has often been referred to as the Republic of NGOs - no one knows exactly how many programs exist in the country, but there are easily thousands, maybe tens of thousands, operating in this country of nine million people. In this environment, NGOs can get caught up in competition with other organizations (or the government) for limited resources, and seeking the good of the country takes a back seat to seeking funds. But here at SOIL, we see other groups as collaborators, not competitors. There is a Haitian proverb that says, Men anpil, chay pa lou: many hands make the load lighter. If we are going to solve the sanitation crisis in Haiti, we ...

Safety First: The New and Improved SOIL Lab!

A few months ago, our team in northern Haiti moved into our beautiful, eco-friendly, cost-effective new office on our farm outside of Cap-Haitien. But we left one thing behind in our old office: the lab! Due to the unique demands of a lab space, it took a bit more time to get set up than the rest of the office. But finally, our new lab is up and running with a built-in sink and back-up power supply ready to go! The SOIL lab is essential to SOIL's mission to transform waste into resources: it helps us ensure that the compost we produce is ready and safe for agricultural use. Although our waste treatment process far surpasses the safety guidelines ...
