Cycling Champion Nears New York!

After more than 4000 km, countless flat tires, cracked spokes, brews with new friends, and smiles along the way, our dear friend John is fast approaching New York City! First and foremost, we have to express our awe and wish John congratulations - this is quite a feat! Next, we are hoping to "grease the wheel" and make sure the final days of John's trip are as smooth and free of broken wheels as possible - to that end, please let us know (by emailing [email protected]) if you are able to help us: Welcome John as he zooms across his personal finish line and into Battery Park tomorrow night! He will be arriving sometime between 11pm and 3am tomorr...

Cycling for SOIL!

Dr. John Kilbride, a dear SOIL friend (and the esteemed brother-in-law of SOIL co-founder Sasha Kramer), embarks July 23 upon a 2-wheeled odyssey of federal proportions; pedaling from Santa Monica pier in LA, to Battery Park in NYC. He will be spreading the word about SOIL and our ten year anniversary to all he meets! Our grand adventuring friend is inviting all of you to join him on his journey - whether you want to pedal along for a few miles, provide water/toilet breaks along the road, or a vehicle escort through tricky urban areas (we're looking at you, New Jersey/NYC friends!). If you're interested in joining or helping John during his trip, ...

Rallying for SOIL

SOIL friends Scott and Drew Gurian are in the midst of getting ready for what can only be called the adventure of a lifetime. This summer they are participating in the Mongol Rally, an annual event involving hundreds of teams driving tiny vehicles across Europe and Asia (a quarter of the way around the planet!) to raise money for good causes. We are honored to say that the Gurian Brothers have selected SOIL to benefit from their fundraising adventure, and we'll be following along all summer as they drive 11,000 miles from London through 19 countries to Mongolia in (as they call it) a "ridiculously tiny car." Scott and Drew are making their final ...

Engineering for Change: "Five questions with Sasha Kramer"

Written by Rob Goodier for Engineering for Change on July 8, 2012 Sasha Kramer's enthusiasm for recycling poop is contagious. After hearing from her, it's not hard to imagine the need to give your indoor bathroom a Stone-Age rennovation. She developed EcoSan latrines that store human waste in removable 15-gallon drums for composting. Toilets that transform waste into compost are the key to healthy soils and sustainable living, Kramer says. In that case, maybe everyone's toilet should be a modified pit latrine? Another key to sustainability is sanitation itself. Kramer promotes both, taking her message of back-end recycling (get it?) to camps and ...

Co-founded by Emerging Explorer Sasha Kramer, SOIL was selected for their innovative linkage between human health and soil health and is the first ever recipient of the award. The Land for Life Award was created by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to recognize and support ...

Experimental Garden Success!

Fantastic news from the experimental garden at Pernier: A batch of cabbages came in last week, some grown with SOIL compost, some without. The cabbages grown without compost looked perfectly fine, but the SOIL compost cabbages looked magnificent! Everyone in the office was excited to see the results of such a successful agricultural trial, and immediately set about quantifying the differences between the two experimental crops. The 'With Compost' patch yielded 14 cabbages, with an average weight of 1.3 kilograms. The 'Without Compost' patch yielded just 4 cabbages, weighing an average 0.6 kilograms. The power of compost prevails! After weighing ...

The 11 Steps to Using a Urine Diversion Toilet

Did you miss the Sustainable Sanitation Conference? Don't worry, we'll have video footage, presentations and further information available soon. In the meantime, check out one of SOIL's tried and true educational tools: the Eleven Steps to Using a Urine Diversion Toilet. We've used the Eleven Steps at EcoSan trainings and toilet inaugurations as an interactive, fun way to teach people how to use our toilets. The exercise helps people to understand Urine Diversion toilets, and hopefully to feel more comfortable using the toilets and talking about them. Don't know about UD toilets? Click here. The following slideshow is a guided tour through the ...
