Fertilize Your Plants With Pee!

As an Ecological Sanitation (EcoSan) organization, one of the aspects of the work we do is to reincorporate the nutrients harvested from our bodies and, after treatment, return them to the soil. At our farms here in Haiti we are continually conducting agricultural experiments with the EcoSan compost that we produce.

Are you interested in doing some garden experiments with nutrients that you excrete from your body too? Science Buddies has put together the guidelines for a urine fertilization experiment that anyone can do in their home! The experiment involves collecting and using your urine to fertilize tomatoes alongside tomatoes that receive no fertilizer. Urine is sterile when collected mid-pee and can be a cheap way to grow more vegetables. Try it at home and see! And don’t forget to let us know how it goes!
