- Special Considerations When Traveling to Haiti
The reason that we all love SOIL and that we are so determined to make our work succeed is that we’re building sustainable solutions in a difficult context. That also means that traveling to visit our work brings some unique challenges. SOIL has more than 10 years of experience in hosting a wide range of visitors, and we are confident in our ability to manage risk and create an insightful and inspirational experience for our guests. However, we do want to be clear about what to expect and we are happy to discuss any questions that may come up around these special considerations.
Health: Medical services in Haiti, especially for those with pre-existing medical conditions or in need of critical care, can be limited. Because of geographical location and poor sanitation, there is a higher risk of contracting tropical and waterborne diseases than in other countries. Basic precautions like using bug spray, bringing hand sanitizer, and avoiding street food can help reduce the risk of infection. We recommend that you review the recommended vaccinations for visiting Haiti, visit a travel clinic prior to the trip, and speak with your doctor if you have concerns.
Hurricanes: Hurricane season in the Caribbean tends to run from June through November. We will be watching for hurricanes in the Caribbean before your trip and we will try to be conservative about canceling and rescheduling your trip if Haiti or Miami is on the route of approaching hurricanes.
Civil Unrest: Haiti has experienced periods of political unrest and insecurity, particularly in the capital of Port-au-Prince, over the past year which has increased travel warnings by the State Department. There is a possibility that we could see more instability in the country in the month to come. SOIL follows this news closely and we will keep in touch with you leading up the trip if we have concerns about political unrest during your visit. We will be conservative about canceling this trip if there are indications that there will be unrest during the dates of your planned visit.
If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
