Happy Mother’s Day from SOIL!
Don’t worry, we’re not a few weeks late – in Haiti, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of May. As in America, it’s a major holiday, and last week everyone was looking for the perfect cards, flowers, and other gifts to show appreciation to their moms!
Here in Port-au-Prince, there are mothers in nearly every EkoLakay household we serve, the majority whom have children under the age of 5. We thought Mother’s Day would be the perfect opportunity to show our customers some love!
Our EkoLakay team put together basic hygiene kits that included a small bottle of bleach, toilet paper, Fab (a popular cleaning product in Haiti), and soap. While this may seem like the kind of gift that American mothers might dread (“Oh, thank you, you got me cleaning products!”), we knew from previous promotional activities that the kits would be a hit with our customers, who find deep pride and satisfaction in the cleanliness and appearance of their homes, and their EkoLakay toilets in particular!
Herby, SOIL’s EkoLakay Program Manager, and our new EkoLakay supervisor, Fabienne, distributed the kits during our weekly collection service. Along with the kits, they delivered a simple but heartfelt message: Thank you for choosing EkoLakay to help take care of your family!
The team reported that the gifts were indeed a success: “Everyone was surprised to see this lovely gesture… They said to us, ‘Thank you so much, EkoLakay!’”
We’re so proud that we can help so many moms (and dads!) provide safe, dignified sanitation for their families.
