SOIL Partners with the American Red Cross to Expand Sustainable Sanitation Services in Northern Haiti

Over the past few months, loyal readers of the SOIL blog may have noticed several posts about SOIL’s growing partnership with the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, first approached SOIL last summer to design and lead a series of trainings designed to help development workers enhance environmental and social resilience to future disasters through their emergency relief work. While this exciting effort is ongoing, SOIL’s collaboration with the American Red Cross continues to grow.

In February, SOIL and the American Red Cross again joined forces to expand access to SOIL’s ecological sanitation services in northern Haiti. Thanks to critical support from the American Red Cross, over the next few months SOIL will be working to:

  • Expand the capacity and operational efficiency of the SOIL composting waste treatment facility in Limonade, Haiti (just outside of Cap-Haitien).
  • Construct and install 200 toilets in homes throughout urban Cap-Haitien as part of SOIL’s growing social business pilot to sustainably provide dignified, safe sanitation services in Haiti’s most vulnerable communities.
  • Construct a small training center on the SOIL farm in Limonade to host workshops and trainings for farmers, other sanitation providers, and local entrepreneurs.

We hope that you will keep up with our progress on SOIL’s Facebook page and join the conversation on Twitter as we report on this effort over the coming months.

Also, through May 10th, all individual donations to SOIL are being matched $1 for $1 by the 11th Hour project as part of a Spring Challenge to meet the growing demand for SOIL services in Haiti. You can support the expansion of this exciting effort across Haiti by making a contribution to SOIL today.
