SOIL Toilets on the Move!

Business is booming for SOIL’s new mobile toilet enterprise! The mobile toilets, which are donated port-a-potties that our sanitation team has retrofitted with SOIL’s simple EcoSan technology, are our newest income-generating project. Along with our household toilet pilot business, compost sales, and marketing crops from our research farms, profits from mobile toilet rentals provide valuable revenue to support our free public toilets as well as other SOIL projects.

We’ve set up mobile toilets for everything from construction sites to Carnival, but a recent rental was particularly fun for us! Our supporters at NRG Energy, who are donating additional solar panels for SOIL’s new office in northern Haiti, came to Port-au-Prince to do the same for some of our friends here in the neighborhood. So last week, Operation Blessing (NRG’s in-country logistics partner) rented four mobile toilets for the construction volunteers – two each at the Apparent Project, an economic empowerment program, and at Zanmi Beni Children’s Home. The NRG panels will help these two organizations reduce their power costs and their carbon emissions by cutting the use of diesel-generated electric.

Naturally, SOIL’s toilets fit right in at this eco-friendly construction project. Because SOIL’s mobile toilets use ecological sanitation to process waste and produce compost, they’re much better for the environment than traditional port-a-potties, which use harsh chemicals, and (at least in Haiti) aren’t always emptied in safe waste treatment facilities. Moreover, SOIL’s toilets are less expensive to rent than traditional port-a-potties on the market here. And according to many users,”They just smell better.”

We’re happy that SOIL played a small part in helping these inspirational organizations save money and help the environment, and in doing so, we got to raise awareness about EcoSan and generate income to support greater access to safe sanitation in Haiti!
