Final Earthquake Response Update

SOIL has been working in Haiti for over 15 years and throughout that time, we've learned many lessons. From then until now, there is one lesson that resonates the most, and that is the importance of working in partnership with communities in everything we do. Community-driven impact continues to guide our work every day and has also provided a valuable framework for how we respond during emergency events that impact Haiti. It is imperative that Haitians are able to respond to the needs of their communities because oftentimes, outside actors don’t know the reality of what the population really needs.- Rea Dol, long-time SOIL partner and ...

SOIL’s community-led earthquake response: Interview with Réa Dol

SOIL Co-founder Baudeler Magloire with Rea Dol and partners preparing emergency response supplies. SOIL was founded in the spirit of working side-by-side with communities to build ecological sanitation solutions that could be community-led. That principle idea of community-driven impact continues to guide our work every day and has also provided a valuable framework for how we respond during emergency events that impact Haiti.   This approach allowed SOIL to immediately respond to the overwhelming need for support and emergency supplies following the devastating earthquake in August. Through our long-time community partners and deep roots in ...

September 2021 Newsletter: From Response to Reconstruction

We are deeply grateful to our network for your incredible solidarity and generosity in the aftermath of the earthquake in southern Haiti a month ago. The most current assessments of the impact indicate over 2,200 people were killed and another estimated 12,000 people injured. Overall, more than 136,000 families have been impacted by the disaster. Although many large aid groups immediately mobilized to respond to the earthquake, we have been particularly moved and inspired by the outpouring of support within Haiti. It has been humbling to see the ways in which - despite the economic and security challenges faced across the country - neighbors have ...

Earthquake Response Update

Structural damage to home after earthquake (left). Chlorine distribution for water treatment (right).  We want to thank our incredible SOIL community for your generosity and support over this past week in response to the earthquake in southern Haiti. This outpouring of support has enabled SOIL to quickly purchase emergency supplies and coordinate a team of local first responders to bring necessities to the affected areas. We are proud to partner with some of our long time collaborators and community leaders from the south who are from Jeremie and Roche a Bateau, and have accompanied SOIL in our response to the 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew ...

Earthquake Response

On August 14th, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the southwest of Haiti. The damage has been significant and the death toll continues to rise in Les Cayes, the area most impacted. The SOIL team and our colleagues are all safe, but we are heartbroken as another traumatic event has devastated Haiti. In 2010 we watched in gratitude and awe at the outpouring of international support for Haiti. Now just over a decade later, we are again responding to the immediate need for support and emergency supplies for the affected areas, communities, and people that have endured yet another devastating trauma. Our long-term presence in Haiti means that we have the ...

Dear Friends, Ten years ago this month, SOIL’s small Cap-Haïtien team was working around the clock in Haiti’s capital city to mount an emergency response to the earthquake that had struck a few weeks prior. SOIL’s immediate response was focused on emergency relief efforts like food and water distributions as well as transport and translation services for medical care, but we quickly returned to the specialty we had honed in northern Haiti: ecological sanitation. Over a million ...
