SOIL EcoSan Toilets Provide Sanitation Services for Haiti's National Carnival
This year Cap-Haitien was chosen to host Haiti’s National Carnival and we’re all still recovering from a beautiful week of dancing and music. The city saw an influx of over one million people: hotels were fully booked months ago, new ones were being built overnight, friends were pulling out extra bedding and sleep mats, and tents were popping up all over the city. But even in the midst of Haiti’s biggest party, SOIL was focusing on sanitation! Through collaboration with the city and the Haitian government ministry for sanitation (Direction Nationale de l'Eau Potable et de l'Assainissement or DINEPA), SOIL built 10 mobile ecological sanitation ...
Theo Talks Episode 7: Theo Talks Return!
After a little winter hibernation, the Theo Talks series is back in full swing, and we have a couple of different offerings for you this week. As you may have read, the SOIL Farm in Cap-Haitien is now operating on 100% solar power, a very exciting improvement to our operations in Limonade. Join SOIL's charismatic Regional Director Theo for a tour of the new facilities, and learn more about the site's new capabilities with Theo's unique storytelling aplomb. And as a special treat for you, we've also posted a video about SOIL's neighborhood bovine contingent: a mama cow showing her little heifer some affection. Enjoy, and check out our Youtube Channel ...
Soil Nutrient Lab Test Results
With help from our friends at the Instituto Tecnológico San Ignacio de Loyola (ITESIL) in the Dominican Republic, we are now able to look at our farm’s soils in quantifiable terms nutrient-wise! We were even able to compare the soil results to a SOIL compost sample and found that organic matter, phosphorus, and potassium are all significantly higher in the compost. This illuminates the possibilities of how compost applications could help ameliorate nutrient deficiencies in Haitian soils. If you’re curious, take a look at the printout below. These results not only give us a better idea of our land conditions specific to the area, they are being ...
EcoSan Training at SOIL's Composting Site in Trutier
At SOIL, we value education and information sharing because one of our ultimate goals is to assist in spreading EcoSan technology throughout Haiti. We dream of seeing a toilet in every home, and EcoSan for all. Yesterday at our site in Trutier, we were happy to share some of our experiences in EcoSan with a group of 22 people living in Croix-des-Bouquets (just north of Port-au-Prince). The group, made up primarily of farmers, came out for the training session to learn about the differences between SOIL's centralized composting methods, based on a drum based waste collection system, and more permanent double vault toilets. Each of the 22 participa...
An update from our partners at Re.Source
As many of you know, the Household Toilet Project is now in full swing, with 150 families in Shada, Cap-Haitien, using their beautiful household toilets on a daily basis. SOIL's partner organization Re.Source is in the process of checking back in with everyone in Shada to gather information about how people are feeling about the toilets. Here's an excerpt from their latest blog post: "The work doesn’t end when you install the toilets. That’s when it begins. Since deploying our toilets in November, we’ve been working closely with our friends at SOIL to refine the collection service, to make it faster, more convenient, and more enjoyable for our ...
The SOIL Farm in Cap-Haitien is Operating on 100% Solar Power
Thanks to a generous donation from the Meyer and Esther B. Mazor Foundation, the SOIL farm is now full sunny-side up, operating on 100% solar power! With the help of the plentiful and dependable Haitian sun, the 9 panels (each 40W), which are installed at the SOIL demonstration farm and nursery in northern Haiti, will be strong enough to realize our dream of 24/7 power - charging 8 batteries to power everything from lighting to refrigerator. The panels are a great addition to our smaller set of solar panels that power the water pump. This system fills our tilapia ponds, hydrates our agricultural experiments, and allows our regional director and ...
SOIL Publishes its first Annual Report!
Today we are thrilled to present SOIL's first Annual Report! For the SOIL team, this project represented a great opportunity to demonstrate to all of our friends just how dedicated to our programming we are. Over 95% of our funds go directly to our impactful projects that are designed to bring long-term, sustainable benefits to the people we work with in Haiti. So much so that we've never even set enough aside to prepare an annual report! But now, thanks to the hard work of our incredible new friend Meagan Choi, a volunteer graphic designer, we have finally been able to invest the time in putting together this stunning report. It is our great ...
New Clear Vision: "Hope and Remembrance"
Re-Posted from www.oursoil.org to New Clear Vision on January 22, 2013 Dear Friends, I am writing this letter at 3:53 pm on January 12, 2013. Three years ago today, Port au Prince was bustling with activity as people spilled into the streets from work and school. Mothers returned home after a long day of working under the hot sun, fathers greeted their children with tired eyes, neighbors shared warm handshakes and laughed away the day’s challenges. One hour later the city collapsed and over 300,000 of these mothers, fathers, children and neighbors were lost in an instant. Last night at the stroke of midnight the hills around our house in Port ...
A Farewell Bash (and an Intra-SOIL Soccer Match, too!)
On Saturday the SOIL teams from both Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien gathered to celebrate the tenure of our favorite Deputy Director Nick Preneta, who will be leaving in February. Although we're sorry to see Nick go, he will always be a part of the SOIL family, and we hope he'll continue to share his next adventures with us. In true SOIL fashion, Nick's sendoff party was a real event, including a long-anticipated soccer match pitting SOIL Port-au-Prince versus SOIL Cap-Haitien. Although the Port-au-Prince team was ultimately victorious, the day was a win for everyone because the whole team could come together to recognize the amazing spirit and ...
Theo Talks: Guest Edition!
A special guest edition of the classic Theo Talks! Although our irreplaceable Regional Director Theo is out of town, the Theo Talks go on! Anthony Kilbride, SOIL's longtime friend and "First Husband," was channeling Theo on a recent trip to Cap-Haitien and decided to put together a little video in his honor and style. While we can't wait for Theo to get back, the video did give everyone at SOIL the giggles, so we wanted to share it with all of our friends. So without further ado, a special Guest Edition of the Theo Talks! Check out the full Theo Talks series here.
