Back to the Basics: An Overview of SOIL’s Essential Service
Readers of our blog might know that SOIL provides EkoLakay sanitation services to households in the city of Cap-Haïtien on Haiti’s northern coast and that we are currently providing this essential service to nearly 2,000 households, impacting over 11,000 individuals. This past year alone, our sanitation and composting staff collected and treated over 500 metric tons of waste from the communities we serve and produced 170 metric tons of compost through our ecological waste treatment process. But do you know how the service works? For new potential household customers, the EkoLakay journey begins when an individual expresses interest in ...
Meet Djimitri, SOIL’s Director of Operations
SOIL’s Director of Operations, Djimitri Célestin, growing directly out of Konpòs Lakay bags mixed with soil.
We recently sat down with Djimitri Célestin, SOIL’s Director of Operations, to learn more about him, his connection to SOIL, and his lovely garden in Cap Haitien, where he grows vegetables using SOIL's Konpòs Lakay. Djimitri has been a part of the SOIL family since 2019. A condensed version of his interview follows. We hope you enjoy getting to know Djimitri, as much as we enjoy working with him!
Tell us about yourself and how you came to work with SOIL.
I grew up in Haiti, but moved to the US for college. I stayed there for 10 ...
SOIL’s Northern Haiti Site Is A Growing Tourist Attraction
Glory in the shade of beautiful trees and lush greenery! Wander over to check out the “Red Zone!” (but don’t wander into the “Red Zone” because you’ll have to disinfect the soles of your shoes afterwards). Behold the the wonder and mystery of the “Natural Water Purification Act!” And don’t forget to take a ride on the PoopMobile before you exit the "park" (And by park, we mean waste treatment site). Do all this and much more at SOIL's waste treatment site, Mouchinette, in northern Haiti, one of the region's most exciting (and unexpected) tourist attractions! We'll admit, we’re still working on our marketing for “SOIL-L...
SOIL Celebrates May Day at the Annual Limbé Festival
May Day, or Agriculture and Labor Day here in Haiti, is celebrated as a national public holiday. One may wonder about the state of agricultural production here in Haiti after many decades of deforestation and environmental degradation. What is there to celebrate when Haiti is losing over 30 million metric tons of top soil every year and has to import the majority of its food? Haiti used to be known as the “Pearl of the Antilles,” producing so much that it exported the majority of its food. At SOIL, we believe that it’s important to celebrate all the work that local communities are doing to improve agriculture systems and support the dream ...
SOIL Partnership Gets Vegetative with Vetiver Experiment
We love looking at the effect of compost on agricultural production, and we love it when other organizations take an interest too! This time we have teamed up with Caribbean Flavors and Fragrances S.A. (CFF), a Haitian company in Port-au-Prince that manufactures essential oils, and the Sustainable Lush (SLush) funding program through the handmade cosmetics company Lush.
This agriculture experiment focuses on vetiver, a robust plant whose roots contain an essential oil that CFF extracts and Lush incorporates into many of its cosmetic products. Vetiver (scientific name Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a perennial bunchgrass perhaps not quite as well known ...
