GENERATING EVIDENCE TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER PAYMENT BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS FOR CBS SERVICE IN HAITI
In April 2022, SOIL launched a new research project in partnership with Appleseed, a behavioral research agency, to better understand and evaluate customer payment behavior, and develop strategies on how to encourage EkoLakay household sanitation customers to regularly pay the monthly fee for the service on time. SOIL charges a monthly service fee from customers for our household toilet, weekly collection and waste treatment service, in order to contribute to operational cost recovery and establish the provision of sanitation as an essential basic service rather than a charity in Haiti. Unfortunately, establishing on-time payment behavior has been a ...
Behind the Scenes at SOIL: Four Operational Updates
Following a collaboration with a process redesign consultant, SOIL’s EkoLakay team in northern Haiti has been hard at work on operational improvements to build strong foundations for growth in Cap-Haitïen. Our primary objective is for SOIL to ensure we have the systems in place to work as effectively and efficiently as possible through the process of rapid growth in the years to come. After completing a broader organization-wide assessment, SOIL’s operational team has been hard at work on a few specific projects to refine procedures and increase efficiency. A few examples of what we’ve undertaken and a update on progress we’ve make ...

Why Mobile Money? As you can imagine, door-to-door payment collection is time consuming and costly for SOIL and oftentimes is inconvenient for EkoLakay customers. With this in mind, SOIL decided to introduce mobile payments into EkoLakay’s service using Digicel's mobile banking ...
Racing Our Way to A Sustainable City-Wide Sanitation Service
Let’s call it the “fill your container challenge,” (which, let me assure you, is quite different from the ice bucket challenge. You would not want to dump these containers over your head). Over the past two months, 16 of SOIL's EkoLakay sales staff were competing as a part of two teams to see who could install the most toilets in Cap Haitien. Many of the staff who took part in the challenge were relatively new to the team and we wanted a fun way to train them in marketing and sales, while incentivizing new toilet installations. So, we devised the container competition, complete with Instagram-ready graphics, to show our progress! The ...
