First Compost Produced from the New Compost Site!

When we first rented land in the northern Haitian community of Mouchinette to build a new composting waste treatment facility a little over a year ago, the only thing on the property was a big mango tree. In the year since, the SOIL team has completely transformed the site into a beautiful, efficient, and highly productive composting facility. Visitors to the Mouchinette site today see that, alongside that original welcoming mango tree, Mouchinette is a flurry of activity, with SOIL team members working hard to empty drums and buckets, turn the compost, and maintain the facility.

One thing all people working at SOIL have in common is a passion for nutrient cycling and, most especially, recycling human waste and transforming it into rich compost that can be reused in agriculture to produce food to be consumed and, finally, excreted to begin the cycle once again.

As a demonstration of nutrient recycling at it's best... Today, the SOIL Cap-Haitien team is proud to announce that the Mouchinette site has recently produced its first batch of beautiful finished SOIL compost, and we couldn’t be happier with the results! After spending 10 months aging, decomposing, and receiving a pathogen-free bill of health from the lab, this newest batch of SOIL compost is ready to be applied in gardens and farms!

You’ll often hear the phrase “Kaka Kapab” – “Shit Can!” around the SOIL offices, and it is in this spirit that we continue working towards healthy lives and safe sanitation conditions for all.
