SOIL is proud to be a nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, non-profits, and individuals working together to improve the health of our planet. 1% for the Planet connects donors—businesses that wish to help make positive environmental change—with doers—the non-profit organizations making change happen, like SOIL is in Haiti.

Businesses who are members of 1% for the Planet initiative donate 1% of their annual sales to the non-profits that they choose to support. Since its founding in 2002, 1% for the Planet has donated $728 million to environmental non-profits through these impact partnerships.

The Planet Impact Fund supports vetted organizations working around the world developing innovative solutions to combat climate change and protect precious resources while achieving measurable outcomes for people and the planet – all of which are reflected in the work that SOIL is doing every day in Haiti.

Millions of people in Haiti lack access to private improved sanitation. The impacts of this on public health, quality of life, natural ecosystems, and the environment are evident and costly. With a significant portion of the population living without a private toilet option, the lack of safely managed sanitation and waste treatment is a crisis in Haiti that has taken thousands of lives in the form of cholera and other waterborne diseases. SOIL’s ecological sanitation intervention in Haiti is proving to be the most cost-effective, safe and dignified sanitation solution for the communities we serve, and provides a myriad of other positive externalities: preserving water and energy resources, releasing less greenhouse gas emissions, sequestering carbon, increasing local food production, and creating dignified employment opportunities.

Additionally, SOIL's sanitation service is designed to maximize climate resilience and adaptation across the entire sanitation value chain. Our composting waste treatment process reduces greenhouse gas emissions, when compared to other traditional waste treatment systems - 800 kilograms of CO2 mitigated per household per year - and the application of SOIL's compost on Haiti’s farmlands promotes carbon sequestration, water retention and soil health.

“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems,” writes Yvon Chouinard, co-founder of 1% for the Planet.

At SOIL, we believe that protecting the planet should not be the work of the few but of the many. We are grateful to 1% for the Planet for the opportunity to connect with value-aligned businesses and create new partnerships that promote a more sustainable future.
